Minibar Fridges Types We Service

Compressor Minibar Fridge Repair

Absorption Minibar Fridge Repair

Thermoelectric Minibar Fridge Repair
Compressor Minibar Fridge Repair for Hotels
Compressor minibar repair — the most common type: a small sealed compressor, like a regular fridge, that cools well down to about 4°C and suits drinks, fruit and anything that needs proper chilling.
It has a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator and sometimes a small fan. A soft hum while it runs is normal, though it can be noticeable at night in a quiet room. The refrigerant is usually R-600a on newer models (which is flammable) or R-134a on older ones — the type is on the label. Common faults: an ageing compressor, low refrigerant from a leak, a faulty thermostat or a worn door gasket.
Signs it needs service
- The minibar is not cooling
- Loud compressor noise or clicking
- Thick ice on the shelf or the cooling plate inside
- Water leaking inside the minibar
- High electricity bill
- A worn door gasket
Common faults
- An ageing compressor with reduced efficiency
- Low refrigerant from a leak
- A faulty thermostat
- A worn door gasket
- Dust built up on the rear condenser
What we do
- Small compressor replacement
- Leak detection and repair, then recharging with the refrigerant on the label
- Thermostat replacement and calibration
- Door gasket replacement
- Condenser cleaning
- LED light replacement
Care tips
- Unplug the minibar in vacant rooms
- Make sure there is ventilation behind the unit (5 cm)
- Do not put hot food inside it
- Check the condenser every 6 months with the unit unplugged
Questions
The minibar is icing up on the shelf or cooling plate — why?
Usually the thermostat is on the coldest setting or its sensor has failed, or the gasket is not sealing so moisture freezes. Set the thermostat back to the middle and try the paper test on the gasket. If the ice gets thick, unplug the unit and let it melt on its own — never with a knife or any sharp tool.
Is the refrigerant in a compressor minibar flammable?
Newer models usually use R-600a, which is flammable; older ones use R-134a — the type is on the unit's label. If you suspect a leak, air the room, keep flames away, unplug the unit and call a technician.
When is replacing the compressor not worth it?
If the unit is old and the compressor has failed, a small compressor can cost close to the price of a new unit — the technician gives you the cost before the work so you can decide.
Absorption Minibar Fridge Repair for Hotels
Absorption minibar repair — common in hotels because it is very quiet: there is no compressor and no moving parts, and you may hear only a faint bubbling. It cools using heat inside a sealed circuit of ammonia, water and hydrogen, and cools more slowly and less strongly than a compressor model.
The cooling unit in an absorption minibar is a sealed circuit: a heater warms the fluid, and the ammonia circulates through pipes at the back. That is why a warm back is normal, and why the unit must stand level — if it tilts, cooling weakens or stops. This circuit cannot be recharged: if it leaks or is blocked, the cooling unit is replaced as a whole. Common faults: a burnt-out heater, a faulty thermostat, or a blocked or leaking cooling unit.
Signs it needs service
- Not cooling despite being switched on
- The back of the unit does not warm up at all (usually the heater or the power)
- Cooling weakens gradually even though the unit is level
- An ammonia smell (a leak from the cooling unit)
- The unit is tilted
Common faults
- A burnt-out heater element
- A blockage in the cooling unit pipes
- An ammonia leak from the cooling unit (the whole unit is replaced)
- Running tilted for a long time has damaged the cooling unit
- A faulty thermostat
What we do
- Heater element replacement
- Cooling unit replacement if it leaks or is blocked
- Checking the heater, the thermostat and the power supply to the unit
- Levelling the unit
- Thermostat replacement
- Cleaning the rear vents
Care tips
- The unit must stand level — check with a spirit level
- Leave 10 cm of space behind the unit for ventilation
- Do not place anything that blocks the rear ventilation
- Check the unit is still level every few months, especially after cleaning or moving it
- If you smell ammonia, unplug the unit, air the room and call a technician
Questions
My absorption minibar makes a faint bubbling sound and its back is warm — is that normal?
Yes — the bubbling is the fluid circulating in the circuit, and a warm back is normal because the heater and pipes are there. What is not normal: no cooling, a back that never warms up, or a smell of ammonia.
I smelled ammonia, is it dangerous?
Yes — an ammonia smell means a leak from the cooling unit, and ammonia is an irritant and toxic. Unplug the unit, open the windows and leave the room, and do not sleep there until the unit is removed or repaired. A leaking cooling unit is replaced as a whole — this type cannot be recharged.
How do I tell a heater fault from a cooling unit fault?
If the back of the unit never warms up, it is usually the heater, the thermostat or the power supply — and those are replaceable. If the back is warm and the unit is level but not cooling, or there is an ammonia smell, it is usually the cooling unit itself, which is replaced as a whole.
Why is absorption cooling slower?
Because it cools with heat rather than a compressor, so it takes longer to reach its temperature — especially after you load drinks that are not cold, or if the room is hot. Put drinks in already cold if you can, and leave ventilation space behind the unit.
Thermoelectric Minibar Fridge Repair for Hotels
Thermoelectric (Peltier) minibar repair — the cheapest and simplest type: an electric chip does the cooling and a fan carries the heat away, with no refrigerant and no compressor. Its cooling is limited and depends on the room temperature, so it suits drinks and snacks.
The unit is simple and its parts are usually cheap. Common faults: a burnt-out Peltier chip, a cooling fan that has stopped or is rubbing, or a faulty power adapter. If the fan stops, the chip overheats and cooling stops — so keep the vents open and clean.
Signs it needs service
- Not cooling at all
- A loud internal fan
- The unit is hot on the outside
- The power adapter is not working
Common faults
- A burned-out Peltier module
- A failed cooling fan
- A faulty DC power adapter
- A faulty electronic thermostat
What we do
- Peltier module replacement
- Cooling fan replacement
- Power adapter replacement
- Control board repair
Care tips
- Do not expect strong cooling — a thermoelectric unit has limited cooling that depends on the room temperature
- Leave ventilation behind the unit
- Unplug the unit if the room will stay empty for a long time
Questions
It does not cool to 4°C like a normal fridge, is it broken?
Usually not — a thermoelectric unit has limited cooling that depends on the room temperature, so it is not expected to get as cold as a compressor minibar. If it used to cool well and suddenly got weaker, check the fan is running and the vents are clear, then call a technician.
The fan is noisy — what should I do?
Usually the fan is dusty or its bearing is starting to wear. Unplug the unit and wipe the dust off the vents; if the noise continues, the fan needs replacing — a simple repair.
Is it worth repairing?
Usually yes if the fault is the fan, the power adapter or the chip, because the parts are simple. The technician gives you the cost before the work, and tells you if it is close to the price of a new unit.

Tips to Extend Your Minibar Fridge's Life
- Inspect every minibar in the hotel every 3 months — a fault in a single room can seriously damage your reputation
- Unplug minibars in rooms that stay empty for long periods (it saves electricity)
- Make sure guests understand that the minibar is not a freezer — it does not freeze
- An absorption minibar must stand level — if it tilts, cooling weakens or stops
- Unplug the unit and clean the rear condenser every 6 months — dust on it makes the compressor run longer and use more power
- Replace burnt-out interior lights promptly — guests notice
- Leave ventilation space behind the unit and keep the cabinet vents clear — a built-in minibar without airflow cools poorly
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Compressor, Absorption and Thermoelectric minibars?
Compressor: a small compressor like a regular fridge — the strongest cooling, with a soft hum while it runs. Absorption: a sealed circuit of ammonia, water and hydrogen driven by heat, with no moving parts — very quiet (a faint bubbling is normal) but cooling is slower and weaker; common in hotels. Thermoelectric: a Peltier chip and a fan — the simplest and cheapest, with limited cooling that depends on the room temperature.
Do you work on Dometic minibars?
Yes — we repair Dometic minibars of both kinds (compressor and absorption). Parts are original or compatible depending on the part and model, and we confirm availability before the work. On absorption models, a cooling unit with a leak is replaced as a whole unit.
The minibar in room 305 is loud and disturbing the guest — what is the fix?
In a compressor minibar, a soft hum while it runs is normal. If it is loud, clicking or rubbing, the compressor may be weakening, the fan may be rubbing, or the unit may be touching the wall or cabinet — move it out slightly and make sure it is level; if the noise continues, call a technician. If the room needs near-silence, an absorption minibar is the quietest option.
Do you offer scheduled maintenance visits for all of a hotel's minibars?
The details are agreed with hotel management: an inspection of every room, condenser cleaning, thermostat and door-gasket checks, and a written report. Call 16062 to arrange an inspection visit and a written quote.
Do you install new minibars for a new hotel?
Yes — we help you choose the right type (compressor, absorption or thermoelectric), then install the unit, level it (important for absorption) and test it before handover. New power points in the rooms are a job for the hotel's electrician.
What is the typical lifespan of a minibar?
Lifespan depends on the type, how the unit is used and the ventilation around it. Regular cleaning and good ventilation extend it, and the technician can tell you your unit's condition after an inspection.
Do you cover hotels on the North Coast?
Yes — the North Coast, Matrouh and Alexandria are in our service area. The Red Sea and South Sinai (such as Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh) are not in our service area at the moment.
An absorption minibar is tilted — does that matter?
Yes, it affects cooling, but it is not a danger to anyone. Tilting disrupts the flow of the fluid inside the sealed circuit, so cooling weakens or stops, and running it tilted for a long time can damage the cooling unit. Unplug it, adjust the feet until a spirit level reads level, then switch it back on. If it still is not cooling after a few hours, call a technician.

Need a minibar fridge technician now?
